Description

Mechanobiology, an interdisciplinary nexus where biology,
engineering, and computational science converge, has rapidly evolved
into a cornerstone of modern biomedical research. Biomechanics and
Modeling in Mechanobiology was conceived with the aim of capturing
the depth and breadth of this dynamic field. It provides an integrated
perspective that spans scales — from molecules and cells to tissues and
organs — while linking fundamental biomechanical principles to
cutting-edge computational modeling techniques and their translational
potential in medicine.
This book emerges at a time when the influence of mechanical
forces on biological function is not only acknowledged but recognized
as central to understanding development, disease progression, tissue
regeneration, and therapeutic innovation. Mechanobiology no longer
stands at the periphery of biological inquiry; it is now pivotal in shaping
how we design biomaterials, interpret disease mechanisms, and
engineer systems for repair and regeneration.
The structure of the book reflects this multifaceted landscape.
Beginning with foundational concepts in biomechanics and
mechanotransduction, it progressively builds toward advanced topics
such as computational modeling, experimental techniques, tissue-level
mechanics, and applications in regenerative medicine and personalized
therapy. Each chapter is designed to balance theoretical insights with
real-world applications, offering clarity to students new to the field
while providing depth and nuance for experienced researchers and
practitioners.
A particular emphasis has been placed on computational
approaches, given their indispensable role in quantifying and predicting
biological behavior under mechanical stimuli. From finite element
methods to agent-based models and machine learning–enabled
simulations, the modeling strategies covered in this book represent the
evolving toolkit of the mechanobiologist. Coupled with experimental

validation and biological relevance, these approaches are paving the
way for new discoveries in developmental biology, oncology,
orthopedics, and systems medicine.
This volume also highlights the global and local dimensions of
mechanobiological research — including contributions from Indian
laboratories and institutions — underscoring the growing international
collaboration in this domain. By integrating case studies, emerging
technologies, and ethical considerations, we aim to not only educate but
also inspire a new generation of researchers to explore the frontier where
mechanics meets life.
We hope this book serves as a comprehensive reference and a
springboard for inquiry in the rich and expanding field of
mechanobiology. Whether you are a student seeking to understand the
basic principles, a clinician interested in translational applications, or a
researcher developing new models and methods, this book is written
with you in mind.
